Is instant messaging replacing many instances of e-mail for the same reasons that e-mail replaced many instances of printed memos and letters? Please explain your answer.

Yes. IMs and text messages are quick, short, and to the point. They also reach the recipient at once.
Would this be the primary reason it is replacing e-mail? Are there any other reasons that would be included? Thanks!
IMs take less time to write, send, and read. That saves time for both the sender and recipient.
