Water washes over calcium minerals in the soil and dissolves small amount of calcium salts. As the solution drips from the cave roof the water evaporates leaving some of the calcium salts behind. If the water droplet still has some dissolved calcium salts it drops to the floor and evaporates leaving a build up on the floor and that is a stalagmite. This is a dissolving, evaporation of the water and both are physical processes.
