The potential energy of a person standing on a diving platform is the energy they possess due to their position above the ground or pool. It is stored energy that can be transformed into other forms of energy. The higher the person is on the platform, the greater their potential energy.
When the person jumps off the diving platform, their potential energy begins to decrease as they move closer to the pool. As their potential energy decreases, their kinetic energy increases. Kinetic energy is the energy possessed by an object in motion.
At the moment the person is about to hit the water, their potential energy reaches its lowest point, as it has been fully converted into kinetic energy. Most of the energy is in the form of kinetic energy at this point. When the person enters the water, their kinetic energy is then dissipated as they come to a stop, in the process creating other forms of energy such as sound and waves in the water.
In your own words, explain the relationship between the potential energy and the kinetic energy of a person standing on a diving platform over a pool. (3 points)
