In the United States what is the importance of the separation of church and state?

The founding fathers did not want a church-dominated nation. Our Constitution reflects that belief by completely separating church and state. Everyone, regardless of religion, is free to worship any way they want. Or they can choose not to believe in any religion. Christians, Hindus, Muslims, Jews, etc. are all of equal importance in the U.S.
