First Provincial Congress.
At the Second Continental Congress, held in
Philadelphia in 1775, the delegates from the thirteen colonies established the Continental Army and appointed George Washington as its commander-in-chief.
This congress was also significant as it was the first unified government of the American colonies, with representatives from each colony coming together to discuss the growing tensions with Britain and to coordinate resistance efforts. It marked a major step towards colonial unity and ultimately led to the Declaration of Independence and the formation of the United States of America.
