In the feature film Stand and Deliver (USA, 1988), there are many evocative scenes that anyone from any culture can relate to. One of the scenes that affected me the most was when they showed Guadalupe "Lupe," played by Ingrid Oliu, homelife. The scene shows how Lupe takes care of all of her younger siblings while trying to balance time for herself. We see that she was struggling in class to get her work done because she had to be a mother figure at home while both of her parents were out working. Once Lupe does find the time for herself, her mother arrives home and asks her to turn the lights off. Lupe turns them off and finds herself unable to find time for herself. This scene affected me the most because it's similar to my mom's stories about her childhood and educational journey. My mom had to take care of the household while her parents were working, too. She would often tell me about the challenges of pursuing higher education and balancing self-care and household responsibilities. She always told me this was a hard time in her life, so seeing the scene in the film made me see what my mom's life might have been.

You could respond by expressing your understanding of the connection you felt to that scene and how it resonated with your own experiences and those of your mother. Here’s a possible response:

"I completely understand how that scene impacted you. It’s powerful to see a character’s struggle reflect real-life experiences, especially those shared in your family. Your mom's story about balancing household responsibilities and education is both inspiring and poignant. It highlights the often-unseen sacrifices many individuals make for their families. I think it's essential to acknowledge those stories and the strength it takes to pursue one's goals despite overwhelming circumstances. Films like 'Stand and Deliver' help bring these realities to light, allowing us to empathize and appreciate the resilience of those who came before us. Have you talked to your mom about this film? It might be interesting to hear her thoughts on it!"
