Only after the British defeat of the French in the French and Indian war in 1763, were to British able to actively participate in the fur trade with the Indians in the northwest. The British continued an open fur trade and introduced whiskey as a central good in the trade. Alcohol proved to become a problem among many Indians. I think what happended was envolving the idea above is when alcohal was introduced, British population grew much larger.
