In the book Conscience by Louisa Thomas, from the first chapter to the sixth, is there any main event that occurs? I know that Norman goes to Princeton, then travels a lot to different churches and he gets married, but these aren't really main events yet. I know that his great grandfather Stephen discovered a sort of church that taught blacks and whites alike.

My guess is that some of these events are very important for the entire book.
I am reading it but so far I have not understood the events that occured
