In scientific notation, what is the product of 1.2 × 10^3 and 1.4 × 10^2? Express your answer to two significant figures.

Can you also explain how to do this? Thanks!

multiply the numbers and add the powers of 10. Use the commutative property of multiplication to rearrange factors as needed.

1.2*10^3 * 1.4*10^2
= 1.2*1.4 * 10^3*10^2
= 1.68 * 10^(3+2)
= 1.68 * 10^5

You have to do a final adjustment in some cases to make sure that the number is less than 10 and at least 1.0

3.5*10^3 * 8.1*10^-1
= 3.5*8.1 * 10^(3-1)
= 28.35*10^2
= 2.835*10^3
