In general, the air temperature decreases 12F for every 4000 feet increase in altitude. If a hiker climbs 3000 feet, by how much can she expect the temperature to decrease?

3,000/4,000 = 3/4

(3/4) * 12 = 36/4 = 9 degrees

9 degrees because 3,000 feet, and 4,000 feet would become 3/4. so 3/4- would become 12 because 3 multiplied by 4 would equal 12, and 12 would become 36/4 which is basically simplified to 9. I hope this helps you. :))
