I would prefer not to live in Ancient Rome or Greece due to various aspects of their societies that contrast sharply with modern values. Firstly, the social structure in both civilizations was heavily stratified, with significant inequalities between classes and a complete lack of rights for women and slaves. For example, while the elite could enjoy public life and participate in governance, the lower classes and slaves faced oppression. Personally, having grown up in a community that values inclusivity and equality, the rigid hierarchies of Ancient Rome and Greece would be profoundly uncomfortable for me.
Secondly, the military culture in these societies was often aggressive and expansionist. The Roman legions, known for their discipline and prowess, were involved in numerous conquests which not only led to warfare but also the subjugation of other cultures. I appreciate peaceful diplomacy and international cooperation, which stand in stark contrast to the militaristic ethos of these ancient societies.
Lastly, the daily life in Ancient Rome and Greece, although rich in art and philosophy, was often overshadowed by the struggle for survival, especially for the lower classes. Even in the bustling marketplaces or magnificent forums, the realities of poverty and hard labor pervaded life. Having recently volunteered at a local shelter, I recognize the societal challenges today that echo those of the past, making me grateful for the advancements we’ve achieved in human rights and social welfare since then. For these reasons, I find the thought of living in either Ancient Rome or Greece less appealing.
