The reason for fewer individuals at the top of the food pyramid is due to the decrease in energy flow as we move up the pyramid. As energy is transferred from one trophic level to the next, it becomes less and less available to support life. Producers, such as plants, have the most biomass because they convert sunlight energy into chemical energy through photosynthesis. This energy is then available to support the entire food chain. However, as we move up the food chain, each level receives only a small fraction of the energy from the level below it. Therefore, there are fewer tertiary consumers as there is not enough energy available to support a large number of individuals at this level.
