in a class there are 4 boys for every 6 girls. there are 54 pupils. how many boys are there?

5 answers

if there are 4x boys, there are 6x girls.

4x+6x=54
10x=54
x=5.4
so, there are 21.6 boys and 32.4 girls.

a strange solution. Are you sure there was no mistake in the question as written?

Unless, of course, not all the boys and girls are pupils.
that is the do or die question in the math challenge... their answer was 24... and i can't really figure it out how they get the 24....
but steve thanks anyway....
If the answer is 24, then there must have been 60 pupils in the class. 24 boys, 36 girls.
that's right....
