In a cetain year, solar and wind energy generation totaled 1034 trillion Btu's. Wind generated 53 trillion Btu's more than eight times that generated by solar energy.

How much was generated by each source?

W = 8S + 53

W + S = 1034

Substitute 8S+53 for W in the second equation and calculate S. Then use first equation to find W. Check by putting both values into the second equation.
