The Great Compromise was an important agreement made during the Constitutional Convention in 1787 that helped create our government. Before the compromise, there was a big argument between the small states and the big states about how many representatives each state should have in Congress. The big states wanted representation based on their population, so they could have more power, while the small states wanted equal representatives, so they wouldn’t be overshadowed. The Great Compromise solved this problem by creating a two-part Congress. One part, called the House of Representatives, would have representatives based on population, which favored the big states. The other part, called the Senate, would give each state two senators, giving the small states equal say. This compromise helped everyone feel included and made it possible for the states to agree on a new government.
