Bureaucracy is a way that large organizations, like governments or big companies, are managed and organized. Imagine a big school with many students and teachers. In a bureaucracy, there are many layers of management. This means there are people at the top making important decisions, and many others following those rules to help things work well. For example, in a school, the principal makes big choices, while teachers help students and staff keeps everything neat and in order (Roberts, 2012).
Bureaucracies have rules called policies that everyone must follow. This makes sure that everyone is treated fairly and that things don’t get too chaotic. Think of it like a game with rules. Everybody knows how to play and what to expect (Weber, 1946).
While bureaucracy helps in organizing, sometimes it can be slow to make decisions. This is because with many layers and rules, it might take time for someone to get approval. It can feel like waiting for a long time in line at the amusement park! However, the rules help to make sure that everyone follows the same steps, which can be really helpful in big organizations (Merton, 1957).
In summary, bureaucracy is a system that helps organize large groups of people so that things run smoothly and everyone knows what to do. Like a well-organized classroom, it makes sure that things get done and everyone can work together.
