During the American Civil War, border states were important because they were states that were between the North and the South. Maryland was a border state that was very important because it was close to Washington, D.C. Delaware was another border state that was important because it was small, but still had to decide if it wanted to be with the North or the South. Border states played a big role in the Civil War because they had to decide which side to support and sometimes they had split loyalties.
