The digestive system in animals plays a crucial role in breaking down food into nutrients that can be absorbed and utilized by the body for energy, growth, and repair. The process begins with ingestion, where food is taken in and mechanically broken down by chewing and mixing with saliva. It then travels through the esophagus to the stomach, where acids and enzymes further digest it, before moving into the intestines, where absorption of nutrients occurs. Waste products are eventually excreted, completing the digestive process.
