The Vietnamization policy was implemented by President Richard Nixon to gradually transfer the responsibility for fighting the Vietnam War from American troops to South Vietnamese forces. The goal was to reduce the number of U.S. troops in Vietnam and increase the combat capability of the South Vietnamese Army. By doing so, Nixon hoped to achieve a negotiated settlement to end the war while maintaining the credibility of the United States in the eyes of its allies and adversaries. Ultimately, the Vietnamization policy aimed to bring about a withdrawal of American forces from Vietnam.
