The need for the White Wings and sanitation workers in New York City in 1895 was primarily due to urbanization. As cities grew rapidly during this period, particularly due to industrialization and migration to urban areas, there was a significant increase in population density. This led to more waste production and a greater need for organized sanitation services to maintain public health and cleanliness in the increasingly crowded urban environment.
In 1895, the Department of Street Cleaning in New York City created a permanent group of sanitation workers known then as the White Wings seen here. They were some of the earliest garbage collectors and sanitation workers in the United States. What would cause the need for these workers?
