In 1886, the Statue of Liberty was dedicated. What is the meaning of the word "dedicated" in this context? Can't seem to find the meaning from the dictionary.

Merriam-Webster defines dedicated as a verb. This is the meaning you need.

So does it mean "to set apart for a certain use"? So is it right to say that the Statue of Liberty is dedicated as a symbol of freedom?
