Dear Mom and Dad,
Hi! I hope you’re doing okay back home. I wanted to write to you so you know how things are going here. It’s really hard to put into words what I see every day, but I’ll try my best!
Life here is nothing like I thought it would be. We wake up early in the morning when the rooster crows, but there aren’t any roosters around here! It’s always muddy and cold. I can’t remember the last time I wore a dry pair of socks. We eat a lot of canned food, like beans and stew, and sometimes I even find a rat snooping around my stuff! Yuck!
Every day feels the same, filled with marching and training. We practice how to use our rifles, and I’m getting better at it! Sometimes we get to play games in between drills, but it’s hard to have fun when we’re always on edge. There are loud booms from the artillery, and sometimes I can hear shouting in the distance. My friend Tom said it’s just the sound of battle, but it makes my stomach feel all knotted up.
When I take a break, I like to draw in my notebook. I try to draw pictures of home, like our backyard and Mr. Whiskers the cat. I miss that silly cat so much! I also sometimes look up at the sky and pretend it’s a big blue blanket, just like the one we have at home. It makes me feel a bit safer.
I think about you all the time. I really hope that I can come home soon. Please tell Lucy I miss her terrible jokes (even the corny ones!). Give a hug to Grandpa for me and tell him to keep the firewood stocked.
I love you both so much and can’t wait to be back home.
With all my love,
Your son,
[Your Name]
