Imagine you are hired to create a new kind of search engine. Your first step is to carefully consider the effect that bias has on its results.

To do this, you will to look at three other search engines, testing them with various search terms and identifying where the results from each one are different.

1. Start by selecting three search engines that you can easily access. I chose Google, Bing and Yahoo!

2. Next create a selection of at least two search terms that challenge the engines in different ways (for example, you may use different keywords, place quotation marks around some terms, filter for dates or relevance, etc.). Also use filtering tools of your choice for at least one of the terms, using the same tool for each of the three engines. The more different these are the better, to test the different functions of each engine. Example “ best chicken wings with mumbo sauce in Washington DC “

In a 5th graders response, write a brief paragraph explaining how the results differed across the different search engines and search engine tools.

I looked at three different search engines: Google, Bing, and Yahoo! to see how they handled my different search terms. I used these two search phrases: “best ice cream in New York City” and “top soccer players of 2023”. For the first search, Google showed me a lot of specific ice cream shops with ratings and reviews, while Bing pulled up some articles and blog posts that weren’t as helpful. Yahoo! had a mix of both but didn’t show as many local options. For the second search, all three engines found lists of top players, but Google had the latest updates and videos, Bing had some older articles, and Yahoo! focused more on the history of soccer. It was interesting to see how each engine gave different types of results for the same search terms!
