Imagine you are hired to create a new kind of search engine. Your first step is to carefully consider the effect that bias has on its results.

To do this, you will to look at three other search engines, testing them with various search terms and identifying where the results from each one are different.

1. Start by selecting three search engines that you can easily access. I chose Google, Bing and Yahoo!

2. Next create a selection of at least two search terms that challenge the engines in different ways (for example, you may use different keywords, place quotation marks around some terms, filter for dates or relevance, etc.). Also use filtering tools of your choice for at least one of the terms, using the same tool for each of the three engines. The more different these are the better, to test the different functions of each engine. Example “ best chicken wings with mumbo sauce in Washington DC “

In a 5th graders response write a brief paragraph explaining how the results differed across the

I decided to check out three search engines: Google, Bing, and Yahoo! to see how they handle different searches. I used two different search terms. The first one was “best pizza places in New York City.” When I looked up this term, Google showed me a lot of restaurant reviews and maps, Bing had some restaurant lists but also included blog posts, and Yahoo! gave me mostly news articles about pizza. For my second search, I used “fun facts about space!” I filtered the results to show only the most recent information. Here, Google had up-to-date articles and cool videos, Bing provided a mix of articles and images, and Yahoo! focused more on older news stories. It was interesting to see how each search engine prioritized different types of information and how that could lead us to different answers!
