When I searched for the same terms on Google, Bing, and Yahoo!, I noticed some big differences in the results! For the first search term, "best pizza in New York," Google showed a lot of restaurant reviews and maps, while Bing had more articles about pizza places and their ratings. Yahoo! focused on a mix of local listings and some random blog posts. For the second search term, "top kids' movies," I filtered for results from the last year. Google gave me the newest movie lists, Bing showed a lot of videos and trailers, and Yahoo! had older movie recommendations. This showed me that different search engines have different ways of finding and showing information, and they can give you different ideas about what might be the best pizza or the coolest movies!
Imagine you are hired to create a new kind of search engine. Your first step is to carefully consider the effect that bias has on its results.
To do this, you will to look at three other search engines, testing them with various search terms and identifying where the results from each one are different.
1. Start by selecting three search engines that you can easily access. I chose Google, Bing and Yahoo!
2. Next create a selection of at least two search terms that challenge the engines in different ways (for example, you may use different keywords, place quotation marks around some terms, filter for dates or relevance, etc.). Also use filtering tools of your choice for at least one of the terms, using the same tool for each of the three engines. The more different these are the better, to test the different functions of each engine.
In a 5th graders response write a brief paragraph explaining how the results differed across the different search engines and search engine tools
