I chose three search engines to test: Google, Bing, and DuckDuckGo. I used two different search terms: “best pizza in New York” and “climate change effects 2022.” For the first search, I looked for images of pizza, and I noticed that Google showed a lot of pictures of popular pizza places, while Bing had more ads and DuckDuckGo focused on local reviews. For the second search, I filtered the results to show only articles from 2022. Google had a mix of news stories and research articles, Bing showed more news articles, but DuckDuckGo had fewer results overall and focused on environmental websites. The differences showed that each search engine has its own way of finding and showing information!
Imagine you are hired to create a new kind of search engine. Your first step is to carefully consider the effect that bias has on its results.
To do this, you will to look at three other search engines, testing them with various search terms and identifying where the results from each one are different.
1. Start by selecting three search engines that you can easily access.
2. Next create a selection of at least two search terms that challenge the engines in different ways (for example, you may use different keywords, place quotation marks around some terms, filter for dates or relevance, etc.). Also use filtering tools of your choice for at least one of the terms, using the same tool for each of the three engines. The more different these are the better, to test the different functions of each engine.
In a 5th graders response write a brief paragraph explaining how the results differed across the different search engines and search engine tools.
