If each of the 28 million inhabitants of a certain country come, on average, 12 kg of fish per year, between canned and fresh fish, this item being 4 times that of canned. How many tons of fresh fish are consumed, on average, per year?

1 answer

Let F be the average amount of fresh fish consumed per person per year, and C be the average amount of canned fish consumed per person per year. We know that:

F + C = 12 kg/person/year

And we also know that:

F = 4C

Substituting the second equation into the first, we get:

4C + C = 12

5C = 12

C = 2.4 kg/person/year

And therefore:

F = 4C = 9.6 kg/person/year

To find the total amount of fresh fish consumed per year, we multiply by the number of inhabitants:

28 million x 9.6 kg/person/year = 268,800,000 kg/year

To convert to tons, we divide by 1,000:

268,800,000 kg/year รท 1,000 = 268,800 tons/year

Therefore, on average, 268,800 tons of fresh fish are consumed per year in this country.
