4 answers

one book weighs 2.5 lbs
so 5 books weigh 5(2.5) or 12.5 lbs

one notebook weighs 4 ounces
5 notebooks weigh 20 ounces
= 1 lbs and 4 ounces , (if I recall the non-metric stuff)

total = 12.5 lbs + 1 lb + 4 ounces, you were correct here
= 13.5 lbs + .25 lbs
= 13.75 lbs or 13 lbs and 12 ounces

(shows why the US just has to go metric )
Metric spoils all the fun.
Remember:
1 slug = 1 pound/g = (1/32.174049)pounds on the surface of earth only.
Why, Damon, I'm surprised! You never seem to miss a chance at poking fun at English units.

And I (sort of) like all the strange units, just as I miss the old English coinage.

That's weird, if the slug is defined in terms of pounds, and not the other way around. Guess it's all relative...
LOL, English units bother me almost as much as the confusion between bearing and heading in mathematics texts :)
