Although I don't see "distance" as a problem, it might be the same as "noise" in information theory terms. Noise is anything between the sender and receiver that interferes with understanding the message. It can be noise as commonly defined such as in a crowd or with heavy machinery operating, or it could be "snow" on a TV screen, or the wind if you are sending smoke signals. Of course, the greater the distance, the more likely that noise will interfere with the communication.
