(b) Set y = 0 and solve the resulting equation; y=x^3-4x^2-25x+100.

x ^ 3 - 4 x ^ 2 - 25 x + 100 =

( x ^ 3 - 4 x ^ 2 ) + ( - 25 x + 100 ) =

( x ^ 3 - 4 x ^ 2 ) - ( 25 x - 100 ) =

x ^ 2 ( x - 4 ) - 25 ( x - 4 ) =

( x - 4 ) ( x ^ 2 - 25 ) =

( x - 4 ) ( x + 5 ) ( x - 5 )

Remark :

a ^ 2 - b ^ 2 = ( a + b ) ( a - b )

So :

x ^ 2 - 25 = x ^ 2 - 5 ^ 2 = ( x + 5 ) ( x - 5 )

y = ( x - 4 ) ( x + 5 ) ( x - 5 ) = 0

x - 4 = 0

x = 4

x + 5 = 0

x = - 5

x - 5 = 0

x = 5

The solutions are :

x = - 5

x = 4

and

x = 5
