Nouns name persons, places, things, and ideas.
Usually, a noun will make sense if you imagine a, an, or the before it.
For instance, in your previous sentences:
"An extreme climate may affect your communication effectiveness."
You could rewrite this sentence: The climate may affect the effectiveness of your communication.
"Poor grammar may result in miscommunication."
You could say: The grammar may result in the miscommunication of ideas.
