Explain why the Confederacy spared Washington d.c from being destroyed?

my answer. Washington was surrounded by strong fortifications and was filled to the brim with Union troops and because they did it to scare the northerns to make them think that they could win.

I kept looking in my online social studies book and I got confused cause I couldn't find the answer sometimes the answer is there but I get kind of confuse cause I know the answers there but I confused cause I think another part might be the answer and Im not rlly sure. and and I think it might be under south carolina in the early days of the war if its their I don't see it. could someone plz help me cause im kind of confused here?????
