Note: When you multiply a negative and a positive number, the answer will be negative. Two negatives multiplied together yield a negative answer.

Numerator:
-49 - 7 (-1)
-49 - (-7)
-49 + 7 = -42

Denominator:
2 (-6 + 9)
2 (3) = 6

Working with negative and positive numbers is confusing.
