I know that a non- essential question should be able to be answered
with a quick answer.

I am not sure about this one

2. An essential question:

I know that an essential question will take critical thinking and some research to answer

I agree with your essential question.

For a non-essential question (most likely used in an introduction), you'd probably ask something whose answer is terribly obvious!! A rhetorical question. You don't expect it to be answered.
