I don't know how businesses do it (probably there are many different ways of deciding), but in my classroom when we did group work or projects, I assigned a total number of points at the end of the assignment and let each group decide how they believed the points should be divided up. At first, my students were quite democratic about it all, but after a while, they were not so keen on giving equal numbers of points to students who hadn't put in equal effort!
In business, though, I'd imagine each person is already at some particular point in the salary schedule. If there is a bonus paid at the end of a group's work (if it's very successful), then it might be interesting to let the group come to consensus on dividing up the bonus!
