In soccer, the way play is resumed when the ball goes out of bounds depends on how it went out:
-
Goal Line (out of bounds at the goal line):
- Goal Kick: If the attacking team last touched the ball before it crossed the goal line and it didn't result in a goal, the defending team is awarded a goal kick. The ball is placed within the goal area, and any player from the defending team can take the kick.
- Corner Kick: If the defending team last touched the ball before it crossed the goal line, the attacking team is awarded a corner kick. The ball is placed at the corner arc closest to where the ball went out of play, and it is taken from there.
-
Touch Line (out of bounds at the side lines):
- Throw-In: If the ball goes out of play over the touch line, it is restarted with a throw-in. The team that did not touch the ball last before it went out is awarded the throw-in. The throw-in must be taken from the point where the ball crossed the touch line, and the player must deliver the throw-in with both hands from behind their head while keeping both feet on the ground.
These rules ensure that the game is conducted fairly and allows play to resume smoothly after a stoppage.
