How does the muscular system interact with the digestive system?

1 answer

The muscular system helps to move food through the digestive system. Muscles in the walls of the esophagus, stomach, and intestines contract in a coordinated fashion to move food through the digestive tract. The muscles of the diaphragm and abdominal wall also help to move food through the digestive system by compressing the abdominal cavity and pushing food downward. Additionally, the muscles of the jaw, tongue, and cheeks help to chew and swallow food.
