In ultimate frisbee, the defense can take possession of the disc in several ways:
-
Turnover: The most common way the defense gains possession is through a turnover. This can happen in several ways:
- Incomplete Pass: If the thrower fails to complete a pass (e.g., the disc hits the ground, is intercepted, or goes out of bounds), the defense gains possession.
- Blocked Throw: If a defender intercepts or deflects a throw, they gain possession.
- Violation: If the offense commits a violation (e.g., traveling, double team), the defense can take possession.
- Stall Count: If the thrower fails to throw the disc within the allowed stall count (typically 10 seconds), the disc is turned over to the defense.
-
Scoring: When the offensive team scores a point, the defensive team takes possession of the disc for the next point's pull (the throw that starts the next play).
-
Timeouts: If the offensive team calls a timeout, the disc is given to the defense after the timeout ends, and the defense must then play a point.
In all cases, once the defense gains possession, they must establish control of the disc by catching it or picking it up off the ground before they can initiate their offense.
