To become a citizen, the following two options apply:

  1. A person is born in the United States.
  2. A person of foreign birth successfully completes the naturalization process.

(Note: While marrying a U.S. citizen can expedite the process of obtaining citizenship, it doesn't grant automatic citizenship without the completion of the naturalization process.)
