How does 7up help an upset stomach

Carbonated drinks in general tend to adjust the acidity of the stomach, much in the same way as some anti-acids medicines do.
Home remedies and Old wives tales are just that, and because they are passed down from Mom (a trusted source), one keeps up with it.
Drink clear liquids..water, broth, sevenup, sprite, ginger ale, fruit juices. Ginger actually does help, but these days, most ginger ale actually does not contain ginger. Ginger teas, and other teas are helpful. Drink plenty, but sip.
Seven up is a clear liquid, and it tastes good. Some find the carbonation will help stimulate the other gases building up in the stomach to expel (belch).
I like herbal teas at home, or beef broth, however, when traveling, water or seven up are easily obtained.

And I agree with DrRuss, there is some buffering going on with the carbonated drinks.
