How do you find out the number of atoms in a chemical formula?
Count up the number of atoms in the formula. If there is a subscript n after an element sytmbol, there are n or those atoms in the molecule. If there is no subscript, there is only one atom of that element.
If an element symbol appears more than one, treat each separately.
For example, for C2H5OH, there are 2 C's, 5+1 = 6 H's and 1 O for a total of 9 atoms.
