Igneous rocks form from the cooling of magma. When magma, which is molten rock located beneath the Earth's surface, cools and solidifies, it can create igneous rocks either below the surface (intrusive igneous rocks) or on the surface after a volcanic eruption (extrusive igneous rocks).
