This made some countries compete against each other. Militarism means countries built up their armies and weapons, making them ready for war, which made everyone more nervous. Alliances were agreements between countries to support each other if a war started, so when one country was attacked, its friends would join the fight. Because of these three things, many countries were ready for conflict, and when a small event happened in 1914, it quickly turned into a huge war that involved many nations around the world.
