Hernando DeSoto did explore the southeastern region of the present-day United States, including what is now Georgia, and his expedition did lead to the deaths of many American Indians and the spread of European diseases. However, he did not establish any colonies, and Savannah was founded much later, in 1733, by James Oglethorpe.
