I have been trying to write a practice essay for English on how themes direct the plot in Pride and Prejudice. I want to discuss how Austen uses opposing themes to influence what happens in the novel. So far I want to look at how Elizabeth and Colonel Fitzwilliam's potential courtship (i.e. the theme of love) is thwarted by Colonel Fitzwilliam's need to marry for money to maintain his social status (i.e. the theme of class and society). How do you prove that the theme of love exists between these two characters? And what is the most effective way to structure this essay?
