Not sure what level you are at. When you refer to 'mutating' are you considering individual bases being replaced/deleted or larger changes?

One of the advantages of the structure of DNA and the steps to form proteins is that depending on where the mutation occurs it can be insensitive to the change or there is no effect.

You might form your answer by generating a table. Have a column that is labelled 'mutation' and consider individual base changes, loss of a base, change/deletion of a codon, fragmentation of the DNA. Then have columns looking at the advantages and disadvantages, which you might want to think of in terms of short term (to the individual) and long term (individual and subsequent generations).
