Hero for the Day

K. Reiter

Most of the time, I’m rather quiet and shy. I don’t call attention to myself or try to be noticed. However, on this particular day, I was a real hero, and I wanted everyone to know it.

It all started like any other day. I woke up and got dressed. I went downstairs to eat breakfast and headed out the door to school.

“Bye, mom,” I yelled as the door slammed behind me.

“Love you,” I heard her yell back. I started down the same street I walked down every morning. My head was bopping back and forth to the beat that was playing in my headphones. As I glanced up from looking at my phone, I noticed a small, fragile man trapped under his shiny new riding lawnmower.

I tried to wrap my head around what I was seeing. I slowly took my headphones out and whipped my head around to see if anyone else was seeing what I was seeing.

“Help!” I heard him call out. “Someone, help me.” I swear a superpower came over my body because all of a sudden, I felt like I was Thor. With a Herculean effort, I was able to lift the heavy mower up just enough, so the man could slide out. He stumbled up and gave me the biggest hug.

I felt proud of myself as I sprinted back home to tell my mom all about it. She didn’t believe a boy my size was capable of such greatness and strength, but I promised her it had really happened. I decided to call it a day after that and stayed home from school.

The small, fragile man was so amazed at my bravery that he called the local paper and told them the story. The reporters came to my house and everything. They took my picture and did an entire write-up about the incident. I was a local hero.
