A Gift of dying is a Lesson in Living
“The truth is once you learn how to die, you learn how to live.” (Albom, 1997, pg. 82). The poem “Living and Dying“ by Devon McElveen and topic on “death” makes a person reflects on a new perspective on dying. Dying refines recognition on what is truly important in life love, family, friends, faith in God, and making the world a better place. In “Tuesday with Morrie” Morrie tells Mitch the lesson on dying is learning how to live. Death opens many doors for the person who is dying and the people around them, but Morrie desired others to learn this lesson too. Morrie knew his time was limited in this world, but he wanted Mitch to enjoy life not just allowing life to pass him by.
“Living and Dying” by Devon McElveen the poem reminds me of Morrie in “Tuesday with Morrie” “Do I wither up and disappear, or do I make the best of my time left?” (Albom, 1997, pg. 10). We live, love and connect, but never forgotten. The poem express as we grow old we will decay, but idea’s never forgotten. Our minds forget, others remember. A new day, new start, and a new beginning arise when we are towards the dark. To understand what the poet was saying about death, a person would believe death of an individual to be no more than a shift change from one state of existence to another existence. The poet wrote short stories at early age. His first short story was about a crime he witness as a child, and in middle school started writing poems to release stress. The name Devon means Poet in (Celtic).
