In my opinion, the theme of this passage is: With learning and understanding, it can lead to success.

"Alia was surprised by the structure and discipline involved in drawing a portrait."

The 1st quote shows that she has no understanding and doesn't know how to draw portraits because she hasn't learned how to. The 2nd quote shows that the teacher is teaching Alia how to draw a portrait and is gaining understanding and learning/knowledge. The 3rd and final quote is showing how Alia had done a good job at drawing her portrait and is surprised how it came out.
