Having a Ball in Gym Class
UNIT NAME: Numerical Expressions
Part 1
Directions: Before school began, Mrs. Weeks bought a total of 86 balls.
Use the information below to help you write a numerical expression for the
number of each type of ball. Then record the total number of each type of
ball.
• footballs – There are 8 footballs.
• basketballs – Two more than twice the number of footballs are
basketballs.
• baseballs – Four less than 5 times the number of footballs are
baseballs.
• softballs – Six more than half of the baseballs are softballs.

- basketballs: 2(8) + 2 = 18
- baseballs: 5(8) - 4 = 36
- softballs: (1/2)(36) + 6 = 24
Total Number of Each Type of Ball:
- footballs: 8
- basketballs: 18
- baseballs: 36
- softballs: 24

1. When Mrs. Weeks bought all of the baseballs and softballs, she paid
for them using four $100.00 bills. How much change did she receive?
2. Write expressions that include parentheses and order of operations to
show how to find the answer. Show your work.
3. After school began, Mrs. Weeks realized that she needed more
basketballs and footballs. If she spent $135.00 on basketballs and
$48.00 on footballs, how many more balls did she purchase?
4. Write expressions the include parentheses and order of operations to

- Total cost of baseballs = 36 * $7.00 = $252.00
- Total cost of softballs = 24 * $5.00 = $120.00
Total cost = $252.00 + $120.00 = $372.00
Since Mrs. Weeks paid using four $100.00 bills, she paid $400.00 in total. Therefore, the change she received is $400.00 - $372.00 = $28.00
2. Expressions:
- Total cost = (((36* $7.00) + (24 * $5.00))
- Change = $400.00 - (((36* $7.00) + (24 * $5.00))
3. To find out how many more balls Mrs. Weeks purchased after school began, we need to first calculate the total number of basketballs and footballs purchased after school.
- Total cost of basketballs = $135.00 / $9.00 = 15 basketballs
- Total cost of footballs = $48.00 / $8.00 = 6 footballs
Total number of balls purchased = 15 basketballs + 6 footballs = 21 balls
4. Expressions:
- Total number of balls purchased = (135 / 9) + (48 / 8) = 15 + 6 = 21 balls
Therefore, Mrs. Weeks purchased a total of 21 more balls after school began.
1. Total cost of baseballs = 36 * $7.00 = $252.00
Total cost of softballs = 24 * $5.00 = $120.00
Total cost = $252.00 + $120.00 = $372.00
Change = $400.00 - $372.00 = $28.00
2. Expressions:
- Total cost = ((36 * $7.00) + (24 * $5.00))
- Change = $400.00 - ((36 * $7.00) + (24 * $5.00))
3. Total number of balls purchased = 15 basketballs + 6 footballs = 21 balls
4. Expressions:
- Total number of balls purchased = (135 / 9) + (48 / 8) = 15 + 6 = 21 balls
